The United Arab Emirates rolled out the red carpet for Chinese President Xi Jinping for the first stop on his trip to the Middle East and Africa as China seeks closer ties with the region. The UAE sent 12 F-16s and Mirage aircraft to escort the Chinese leader’s plane into Abu Dhabi on Thursday and gave Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan a 21-gun salute on arrival. After his three-day stay at the Gulf state – the first by a Chinese leader in nearly three decades, Xi will head to Senegal, Rwanda and South Africa for the BRICS summit in Johannesburg, before stopping over in Mauritius on the way home. It is Xi’s first overseas trip since the start of his second term in March, and comes as China and the United States are on the brink of a full-scale trade war.

The flagship event of the Pan-African Weekend, the star-studded FACE List Awards took place at the Capitale on Saturday, July 13. Just like any other event of such magnitude, the red carpet session was one of the highlights of the night and the guests and honorees certainly did not disappoint! Glasgow Caledonian has rolled out the red carpet for Annie Lennox for her appointment as the university's new chancellor. The former Eurythmics star becomes the university's first female chancellor, replacing Muhammad Yunus. A host of stars including Martin Compston and Sally Magnusson are attending the bash, as well as Scotland's First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon. Line Of Duty star Compston is one of nine attendees who will be made an honorary graduate by the university. GCU Principal and Vice-Chancellor Pamela Gillies opened the ceremony, proposing the appointment of Annie Lennox as chancellor by saying: "Today is a historic day for Glasgow Caledonian University." Lennox said upon her appointment: "I am humbled and awed beyond measure. I only wish my parents, grandparents and great grandparents could be here to witness this special occasion, as it would have filled them with pride and disbelief.
